Non-fiction.  This book follows the events leading to Harry Withers enlistment, his training for war, and the battles he took part in in France and Belgium. The book records his thoughts, feelings and frustrations regarding the army, his firm religious beliefs, his observations of life in England and Europe and a desire to Australia and his home in Childers Valley, are illustrated in numerous letters he sent home to his family.   

In spite of everything that befalls Harry, his strong sense of duty, and religious faith, enables him to remain true to the end to his mates, his family and his country.
